September News:

  1. Our county had a pretty good day on August 23. We elected Nancy Jacobs, a Jewish attorney who had challenged an incumbent judge with a history of anti-abortion decisions antisemitic beliefs. We also elected one of our own caucus members, Alan Cohn, to run in the general election for House District 15 (CD 15). This is a true swing district and voter turnout is the key to a win in November! One of our two school board candidates won (Perez), and Kathy Castor coasted to victory easily.
  2. We have a potential new project: For the upcoming election in November, our county party has asked each club and caucus to “adopt” an early voting location and organize support for Democrats at that site. That involves getting volunteers to be present during early voting hours to wave signs and hand out slate cards to voters. If we want to do this, we need one volunteer who will organize the effort. This job involves keeping track of volunteers (possibly using an online sign-up system) and making sure the volunteers have what they need (mostly the slate cards we will get from the HCDEC).If someone volunteers for this job, we can try to pick an early voting location near your house. The organizer does not have to be at the site all the time – just make sure others are there as much as possible.Weekends are particularly important.Last cycle, there was a Facebook group for all the sign-wavers and it was pretty entertaining and energizing as people shared stories of what went on.Let us know if you want to take on this job.
  3. Our August meeting was terrific! Thanks to Shelley Reback and Joe Probasco for sharing such great information about the issues surrounding the suspension of our twice-elected, Jewish, State Attorney, Andrew Warren.Andrew Warren’s upcoming hearing is on Sept 19, so stay tuned.
  4. No meeting in September – L’Shanah Tovah to all!
  5. Our next meeting is October 30 at 3 PM, probably at the HCDEC offices. We are looking for a more central location for meetings in the future, so if you know of anything, please share. It has to be free and available on Sunday afternoons.
  6. Please join the Jewish Caucus. It’s only $36 and our local group gets half of all funds for our local expenses. Your membership not only gives us some financial resources; it also gives us the numbers we need to make our voices have more impact.

Early vote site poll greeters: Our caucus is helping with the effort to make sure there are poll greeters at key early voting sites.  We will be primarily supporting the Apollo Beach site (Apollo Beach Rec Center), but we are also helping at the West Tampa Library.  Poll greeters show up
and hand out slate cards to voters.  We also keep an eye on the site, making sure rules are being followed.  Last, the poll greeter is in communication with the poll watcher who is inside the polling location.  It’s fun and super important.  If you’re interested in being a poll greeter, you can sign up
here.  We’ll get more information to those who are interested after you sign up.  You are only asked to sign up for a couple of hours at a time, at your convenience.

We are excited to welcome Becky Ferrell- Anton to our Board as our new Secretary!  Thanks, Becky, for stepping up to help!

August 2023 News:

As we head into the last days of summer, here’s all the news you need to proceed as active Jewish Democrats:

At our last meeting, we heard from the dynamic Anna Eskamani, State Representative from the Orlando area. If our party has a future in this state, she is certainly a big part of it.  If you missed the meeting, make sure to watch for future opportunities to hear her speak.

Other news:  Just recently, our caucus sent a representative to a Kathy Castor thank-you fundraiser.  This event was hosted by AIPAC and included some of our Democratic elected officials such as Andrew Warren and Ben Diamond (former congressman from Pinellas County).  Kathy Castor has taken strong positions in support of Israel, and the crowd was very supportive of her.  We made some good contacts and had some great conversations (welcome to the newsletter, New Friends of the Caucus!).

AUGUST MEETING INFORMATION

Our next meeting features Rocky Brancato, COO for our local Public Defender’s office.  Mr. Brancato has been with the Public Defender’s office for 20 years, and he also chairs the Circuit 13 Juvenile Justice Advisory Board. He serves on the board of directors of DUI Counterattack and the Hillsborough Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (HCACDL). He is past vice chair of the Safe and Sound Hillsborough Youth and Gun Violence Committee, and he is a past member of the board of directors for the Pace Center forGirls, Hillsborough. Mr. Brancato will be speaking about criminal justice reform from the perspective of one who represents indigent defendants.

October 2023 News:

Happy New Year and welcome, Fall!  As we head into the busy season for holidays and events, here’s the news from your Jewish Caucus:

Our Sukkot membership social was great!  Thanks to everyone who came out.  We hope everyone will consider becoming a member of the caucus (or renewing their memberships if they have expired).  The link to join is here– and it’s only $36 per person or $54 per couple. You can also make a one-time donation to the caucus at any time. The funds go to support our activities, and once we have enough, they will go to support Democrat candidates through the HCDEC.  We recently celebrated our first year as a caucus, and we are excited about our growth and opportunities to help elect good Democrats!

Our next meeting is October 29, 3 PM, at the HCDEC offices in Temple Terrace (and streaming on our Facebook page).  Our guest speaker is Mariella Smith, former Hillsborough County Commissioner.  Mariella will speak about the issues facing our county, how the current (R-majority ☹) commission is handling things, and what we can do to improve our county going forward.

Our next big event is our SECOND ANNUAL CHANUKAH PARTY! It will be held on December 10 from 4-6 PM at the Neuman Cigar Company. We are so excited to be able to use this beautiful space to celebrate Chanukah with our fellow Democrats.
